Whether you're all about animals or interested in local history, Nairobi will offer you an unforgettable experience. Even one day is enough to see key tourist attractions, varying from museums to musical celebrations of traditional culture, or getting up close and personal with wild animals.
We have listed a few popular options below:
A short drive out of Nairobi’s central business district is the Nairobi National Park, host to a wide variety of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded. Visitors can enjoy the park’s picnic sites, three campsites and the walking trails for hikers.
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a leader in African wildlife conservation. Through its Orphans’ Project, SWT has raised over 320 orphaned elephants and rhinos. The SWT Nursery, located in Nairobi National Park, is the first stage, where new rescues are nurtured by an experienced team of Keepers. Visitors are invited to join the Nursery orphans for their midday milk feed and mud bath and watch them enjoy their bottles and gather for playtime. The public visit takes place daily from 11 am to 12 noon.
Bomas of Kenya displays traditional villages from Kenyan tribes throughout history. It is also home to one of the largest auditoriums in Africa where you will be treated to an impressive array of traditional dances.
Nairobi Arboretum is 30.4 hectares of wooded landscape situated about 3 km from the city centre. It is one of Nairobi’s most beautiful green spaces, offering visitors shaded walkways, picnic lawns and jogging trails.
The Giraffe Centre is located approximately 20km from the centre of Nairobi and aims to protect the vulnerable giraffe which is found only in the grasslands of East Africa. The main attraction for visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform. The Giraffe Center is also home to several warthogs which freely roam the area along with the giraffes.
The Nairobi National Museum showcases Kenya’s rich heritage with four distinct themes representing Kenya’s Culture, Nature, History and Contemporary Art. Other attractions within the compound include the Snake Park and Botanical Gardens as well as a state-of-the-art Auditorium that occasionally hosts concerts, film shows and other events. Dining and shopping facilities are also available to visitors.
The Karen Blixen Museum was once the centrepiece of a farm owned by Danish Author Karen Blixen and her Swedish husband, Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke. Located 10km from the city centre, the museum belongs to a different time period in the history of Kenya, and later gained international acclaim with the release of the Oscar-winning film ‘Out of Africa’.
